At a time, when Pierce Brosnan was boring the world with his worst James Bond appearance in Die Another Day, two spy thrillers released which became cult classics in their own right. One of them was Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne, an agent with amnesia who completely rewrote the spy thriller genre. The other one was Vin Diesel’s portrayal of Xander Cage, a hard partying extreme athlete who is sent to infiltrate a group of Russian terrorists. Finally, after (what feels like) millions of Instagram posts, teasers, group shots, birthday greetings and everything short of a bathroom shot, the trailer of the film is here.
The trailer that just dropped shows us that the movie follows the same ethos of the first one while upgrading with a world-class cast that includes our very own Deepika Padukone and Lionel Messi’s Barcelona teammate Neymar Jr! Here are some reasons we are really excited about the movie:If there’s one way to make a Hollywood movie better, all one has to do is add either Samuel Jackson or Morgan Freeman. Even though the sequel was bad, the best bit still was Jackson’s return as Gibbons. There’s something rather reassuring in the teacher/mentor/recruiter role whether it’s him as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or as Mace Windu in Star Wars. Jackson’s return as Gibbons will be a great way to see our favourite teacher on screenA lot of Indians have started doing really good roles in Hollywood which go far beyond the stereotypical friend or taxi driver. Irrfan Khan, Freida Pinto and Priyanka Chopra have made inroads in the West and it’s Deepika’s turn to show what she is made of. The actress certainly is one of the most talented in her generation and we certainly hope that she has a meatier role than the six seconds she was there in the sequel.
A truly global and world-class castThe makers of the movie have managed to rope in some of the biggest names from across the world promising eyeballs. We’ve got Donnie Yen from Hong Kong who is best known for his role in Ip Man and helped bring MMA into mainstream Chinese culture and is one of the highest paid actors in Asia. Then there’s Thai actor Tony Jaa, a martial artist who has already hit the big time with movies like Ong Bak and was seen in Furious 7.
Bulgarian Nina Doberev will play a hacker and she is known for her popularity in the drama series The Vampire Diaries, while Australian model Ruby Rose has dominated headlines since she played Stella Cartin in Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. Others in the movie include Scottish actor Rory McCann (who Game Of Thrones fans love as The Hound), English MMA fighter Michael Bisping and Colombian actress Ariadna Gutiérrez. The makers have managed to get some of the most popular regional players and will guarantee eyeballs across the world from Australia to India.
Oh and let’s not forget that Messi’s teammate and one of the most high-profile footballers in the world, Neymar, is also part of the movie.
Vin Diesel’s return as Cage in the extreme world built for him
In 2002, Xander Cage was unlike any agent ever seen on screen and the movie had cameos from various personalities from the ‘extreme’ world including Tony Hawk, Mike Vallely, Carey Hart, Mat Hoffman and Josh Todd. The opening scene of that movie takes place in a Rammstein concert to cement the ethos of the movie and despite mixed reviews, Cage became a very, very popular spy with a different kind of crowd. A lot of fans were disappointed when Vin Diesel refused to play the role in the sequel (the same way he walked out of the Fast and Furious franchise) and we can hope xXx 2: The Return of Xander Cage will mark the beginning of a glorious new era of action movies.
