In run up to 2017 State Assembly polls, Punjab Congress has decided to give more preference to women in its election manifesto. “Congress party will lay more stress on the women empowerment in the election manifesto of the party for the coming Vidhan Sabha elections,” announced Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Charanjit Singh Channi on Sunday.

Channi, after distributing sewing machines in Banmajra village in Ropar district, said that the political parties should also emphasize more on women empowerment in the State.

“Today, the women folk in villages are really in a bad shape and we should plan out some new innovation for them so that at least they become self-dependent,” he said.

Channi said that the women should not only be made self-dependent but they should earn livelihood for their children also. “The only purpose of distributing these machines is that the women stand on their own feet and do small earnings for themselves and their kids,” he added.

“Very soon, we will organise women sports match in Sri Chamkaur Sahib to promote games. Women across Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency will be invited for the competition, which will include races and pulling the string etc,” said Channi.
