Neighbours have spoken of their shock after a pensioner’s body was found at a house in Chesham. Police have launched a murder probe and have arrested a 41-year-old man from the town on suspicion of murder .

Police are treating it as an unexplained death.

The woman, named locally as Linda Harding, was in her sixties and said to have been a retired teacher with at least one son.

Long-time friend Susan Cook has described her shock at the news, saying Ms Harding was a ‘nice lady’.

68-year-old retired Ms Cook paid tribute to Ms Harding, who she had known for over 10 years.

She said: “I knew Linda Harding. She was a nice lady.

“That was a shock – it’s so peaceful here.

“I got on with her, she was nice.

“I’ve been here since 2005 and she must have been her five or so years before then, maybe longer I don’t know.”

She added: “She used to go down to the town in taxis and do a bit of shopping and visit her fella.

“I was so shocked. I think everyone round here is shocked because it’s such a quiet place.

“You don’t think it’s going to happen on your own doorstep do you.”

Neighbour Edit Morai said: “This is a very nice area, quiet and nice.

“Something has never happened like that.”

Forensic teams were seen to enter the house in Stoney Grove this morning (Friday September 30).

Police were called to the house at around 11.30am yesterday (September 29), where they found the body believed to have been Ms Harding.

Although she is yet to be formally identified at this time her next of kin has been informed of her death.

A post mortem examination is due to take place later today (September 30).

Senior investigating officer, Det Ch Insp Mark Glover said: “I would like to reassure the local community that this is an isolated incident and that we are conducting a meticulous investigation to establish the cause of death.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the woman at this extremely difficult time.

“Local residents might see an increased police presence in the area while we conduct our enquiries and there will also be a scenewatch at the address while the investigation there continues.”
