A 28-year-old woman has made a brief appearance in Perth Magistrates Court on a charge of leaving her two young step-children at home alone while she travelled overseas.

The woman, who can not be identified for legal reasons, was arrested when she flew back into Perth from Bali earlier this month.

It is alleged that two days earlier she had left the children, aged 4 and 6, alone in the family home in the Perth suburb of Cloverdale.

The children were discovered by police who entered the house through an unlocked door.

The woman was charged with two counts of engaging in conduct that may have resulted in harm to the children.

She was assisted by a Mandarin interpreter during her court appearance, and her case was adjourned for a month so she could get legal advice.

Police said the children’s father was also overseas at the time, and the children had been removed from the house and placed in “appropriate care”.
