The body of a woman was found not far from Kew’s busy High Street, in Melbourne’s east, on Tuesday afternoon. Police swarmed the area, surrounding businesses and houses, after the 29-year-old woman was found dead at a property on High Street, near Derrick Street, about 1.40pm.

But it is unlikely police will know how the woman died until Wednesday morning. “The exact circumstances of her death are not yet known and police will investigate to determine if it is suspicious,” police said in a statement.

Detectives left the area about 5.15pm, but a crime scene remained cordoned off.

The crime scene extended along Derrick Street from High Street to about 50 metres from Cotham Road. Police appeared to be focusing their investigation on the rear of a Turkish restaurant, at the corner of Derrick and High streets.

They also spent time in houses on Derrick Street, opposite the business. The business is also overlooked by a three-storey office block.

The Critical Incident Response Team and staff from the coroner’s office were also at the scene.

Owner of Rox Cafe on High Street, Louie Mir, said police appeared to be looking at a nearby kebab shop and an upstairs apartment.

“The police have been here since the morning at the shop on ground level, and they have bedrooms or something upstairs,” Mr Mir said.

“I’m operating as normal, because I’m not sure of the risk.” A shop assistant at nearby Masquerade Costume Hire said traders were confused about what was happening.

“All the shops are still open, the police have just closed off a side street and seem to be around a house,” she said.

“There’s lots of police cars and a helicopter.”
