A woman was brutally murdered by her two sons in Chakkar village in Jagraon, about 40km from here, on Wednesday. Twenty year-old Sukhpal Singh, alias Sukha, and his younger brother, 17, both of whom work as labourers, suspected her of having illicit relations.
Villagers said the brothers fought frequently with their 40-year-old mother Karamjeet Kaur, whose husband Bhinder Singh works in Dubai. “Bhinder has been in Dubai for eight years and comes home once a year. Kaur’s sons did not even let her step out,” a villager said.
Police said in the wee hours of Wednesday, the duo again had a quarrel with Kaur and in a fit of rage hit her with a sharp-edged weapon multiple times.
Kaur suffered injuries on neck, left ear and right shoulder and died on the spot. Villagers informed the police after seeing the body around 4am, but by that time the accused had fled the house.
A manhunt was launched and the two were arrested from the village in the afternoon. SSP Ludhiana (rural) Upinderjeet Singh said the brothers have confessed to the crime. “After murdering their mother, the duo threw the weapon in a pond. We are yet to recover it. The victim has five wounds on head, five on chin, one on right shoulder and another on arm,” the SSP added. Cops from Hathur police station moved the body to Jagraon civil hospital for a post-mortem examination.Hathur police station SHO Shivkamal Singh said a case has been registered against the accused under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC on the statement of Karnail Kaur, cousin of the deceased.
Police said the brothers do not have a criminal background.
