Balwinder Kaur’s husband Labh Singh, who was sleeping by her side, has claimed that he was heavily drunk and did not know of the attack. He is being interrogated. A case of desecration was registered against Balwinder Kaur, a Dalit, on November 10 last year on charges of attempting disrespect to the Guru Granth Sahib when she had entered the village gurdwara in her shoes.
Police are investigating if the murder is related to the case, which is pending trial. According to police, Balwinder Kaur was sleeping when three unidentified persons allegedly entered her house and attacked her with sharp weapons. The post-mortem examination has revealed that she sustained grievous injuries on both her legs and that she died of excessive bleeding.SSP, Amritsar Rural, Harkamal Preet Singh, said, “After the assailants attacked the woman and left, she tried to wake up her husband, but he did not respond. Then, she went to the other room and woke up her adopted granddaughter. The 7-year-old could not do much. Balwinder Kaur died of excessive bleeding from her wounds. Her husband learnt about the incident only in the morning and then informed the police.”
SSP Harkamal added, “We have registered a case on charges of murder against three unidentified persons on the statement given by the victim’s granddaughter. Before dying, the victim had told her granddaughter that there were three attackers.”
Station House Officer of Lopoke police station, Inderpreet Singh, said, “We are investigating all angles. It could be related to the desecration episode, or it might be a case of personal enmity. Last year, she had entered the gurdwara wearing her shoes. At that time the atmosphere was tense due to Sarbat Khalsa, and a case was registered against her on charges of attempt to desecration. She was released on bail and had been living in the village ever since.”
Balwinder Kaur was cremated this evening. In July, a 47-year-old woman, also named Balwinder Kaur, facing desecration charges, was shot dead by two persons in Ludhiana.
