The names and social security numbers of more than 100,000 current and former sailors were accessed by “unknown individuals” after a laptop was compromised, the U.S. Navy said Wednesday. The Navy said it was informed of the incident, which affected 134,386 people, on Oct. 27 by contractor Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services, whose employee was using the laptop. "The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously - this is a matter of trust for our Sailors," said Vice Adm. Robert Burke, the chief of naval personnel, in a statement. "We are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach,” he added. The details were taken from the Career Waypoints database — or C-WAY — which is used to submit re-enlistment and Navy Occupational Specialty requests. The Navy said it will notify all those affected by methods including phone, email and letter in the coming weeks. It said there is no evidence to suggest the information has been misused at this stage of the investigation.
