Two more farmers commit suicide by hanging

A 42-year-old farmer, Darshan Singh of Burj Rathi village, committed suicide today by hanging himself allegedly due to debt burden.Darshan allegedly owed Rs 10 lakh to various banks, Rs 1.5 lakh to an arhtiya, and Rs 25,000 to a cooperative society. He had lost a cotton crop last year while this year he opted to sow cotton and paddy both in his two acres of land. Sarpanch Bhupinder Singh said “The deceased has left behind his wife, a daughter and a son.”Moga: A 30-year-old debt-ridden farmer has allegedly committed suicide at Langeana Nawan village in Baghapurana sub-division of the Moga district. This is the second incident of suicide by a farmer in this district in the past four days. Kulwant Singh of Langeana Nawan village owned just one acre of land. His wife, Paramjit Kaur said her husband had taken Rs 2.5-lakh loan from a bank and Rs 12.5 lakh from other local sources, including private money lenders, to run his own business but it did not turn out to be profitable. He is also survived by a 12-year-old daughter.
