Three Catholic elementary schools around Windsor-Essex will close. Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board trustees made the decision Tuesday night.

St. Bernard in Amherstburg and St. John in Windsor’s Bridgeview neighbourhood will both close this June.

All St. Bernard students will move to Stella Maris.

Students from kindergarten to Grade 6 at St. John will be bused to St. James on the other side of Huron Church Road. Grades 7 and 8 students from both those schools will then move to a new middle school at Assumption to make room.

Queen of Peace in Leamington will close once arrangements can be made for grades 7 and 8 students from the town to attend a middle school at Cardinal Carter.

“We’re going to take some time to grieve the loss of these three schools, and then we’re going to switch gears, and we’re going to start to celebrate new beginnings,” board chair Barb Holland said. “New beginnings of three new school communities, three groups of students and parents coming together to ensure that Catholic education continues to be vibrant.”

The board listened to nine presentations at the meeting before taking the vote.
