Although the police had lodged FIR against 170 persons with attempt to murder charges -of whom 19 had been identified – no arrests have been made yet.After 12 days of police remand, three persons arrested in connection with alleged desecration of Quran in Malerkotla town of Sangrur district were sent to judicial custody.
“They were produced in a trial court in Malerkotla Sunday and were sent to judicial custody, said SP (D) Jaskaran Singh Teja. Teja “We will call AAP MLA Naresh Yadav again for interrogation as we are not satisfied with his replies.”
Meanwhile, police are yet to focus on the case of attack on the house of Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) and Malerkotla MLA Farzana Alam, the same night the desecration incident was reported, on June 24. A mob had then torched a vehicle and damaged over a dozen vehicles parked within her residential premises. They also set the security barracks on fire. Five security personnel were injured.

Later, speaking at an Eid function, Alam’s husband and former DGP (Prisons) Izhar Alam said, “I forgive all those who attacked my house. I want peace to prevail in the town.”
However, he had earlier alleged that Congress leader Razia Sultana’s men were behind the attack and Sultana had also said that 19 of her supporters had been ‘framed’ in the FIR.
Asked about the case, SSP, Sangrur, Pritpal Singh Thind said, “We are concentrating on the case of attack on MLA’s house and we will arrest the culprits soon. Interrogation in both cases will go on side by side.”
