The state CID on Thursday evening had arrested the owner of a nursing home and a woman associated with an NGO in connection with the inter-state newborn trafficking racket busted in Baduria recently, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 14.CID West Bengal connected late night raid in newborn baby trafficking case and recovered ten more new born babies. This time the babies were recovered from an old age home. “Ten newborn babies have been recovered from third floor of Purbasha Centre. Two ladies have been detained”, said DIG (CID) B.L.Meena. According to official sources the centre from where the sleuths recovered ten babies is an old age home for mentally challenged persons. Those infants were shifted by the kingpin and main accused of the racket who is at large. Partha Chatterjee, owner of Shri Krishna Nursing Home in Kolkata, College Street, had allegedly been involved in the racket for the past three years, while Marefa Bibi of Raghabpur Machlandapur of Habra, North-24 Parganas, was allegedly working for the Sujit Dutta Memorial Welfare Trust, an NGO which would lure childless couples under the guise of facilitating adoptions and sell newborns to them. She was an “active” trafficker and was working with Utpala Byapari (already arrested), the officer said. On November 21st CID had raided Baidya Clinic and Sohon Nursing Home in Bagjola locality of Baduria Monday night. Sleuths had then recovered three newborns, two of which were found hidden in a biscuit carton at Sohon Nursing Home.
“The private nursing home has been running a huge racket involving trafficking of newborns for the last three years with the help of NGO’s. Police had arrested 14 people in this case till now. They all were nabbed under section 369 (kidnapping or abducting child under 10 years with intent to steal from its person), 370 (trafficking) 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and 34 of CrPc.
