Detroit police say a domestic dispute led to the shooting of a 7-year-old Tuesday night on the city’s east side. The incident was reported at about 10:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Fairview, said Officer Nicole Kirkwood, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department.

A man had argued with the boy’s mother there a day earlier then returned and tried to visit a child they have together, Kirkwood said. But when the woman’s brother blocked him, “the suspect attempted to shoot him and struck the child,” she said.

The relationship between the suspect and the boy, who had been outside with several other people, was unclear, police said.

Police transported the youth to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Kirkwood said late Tuesday.

The alleged gunman, whom police identified as Torrey Craft, is believed to have fled in a silver Chevrolet TrailBlazer. Authorities are investigating witnesses to gather more information about the incident, Kirkwood said.

An extensive search was underway early Wednesday, Kirkwood said. “We’re looking everywhere for him.”

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Detroit police investigators at (313) 596-1616. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
