A 13-year-old cyclist has died after being struck by an SUV near Thurso, Que., on Monday night. The crash happened on Highway 148 in Lochaber West, Que., at about 8:30 p.m., after nightfall, Quebec police say.

The driver of the SUV was heading east when they struck the teenager, who appears to have been cycling in the middle of the road, Sûreté du Québec spokesman Sgt. Marc Tessier said.

The driver may not have seen the cyclist in the dark, Tessier said.

The victim, from Plaisance, Que., was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died in hospital early Tuesday evening, police said.

An investigation is ongoing, but Tessier said no criminality is suspected so far.

“It’s probably just a tragic accident because of all of the circumstances,” Tessier said.
