A 16-year-old boy has been charged with mischief after a Winnipeg police helicopter crew became disoriented because of a laser pointer in the area of Salter Street and Selkirk Avenue.

The green light hit the Air1 cockpit five times around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Winnipeg police said.

The flight crew was temporarily disoriented, which caused the pilot to make abrupt movements. The crew was put at serious risk, police said.

Police on the ground took custody a 16-year-old boy and seized a laser pointer from a house in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue.

The teenager is facing several charges including mischief for endangering life. He was released on a promise to appear in court.
