She is usually known for the offbeat characters she essays, but actor Tannishtha Chatterjee now wants to foray into an out-and-out Bollywood masala film. “Actors love to be cast against type, that’s when you get the most interesting performances out of them. I am dying to dance around trees. There is a light side to me. I did the film UnIndian and am now doing a play that’s funny and light. I want to show them that I am not meant for only serious roles,” says Chatterjee, who’s done films such as Jal (2012), Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid (2012) and Angry Indian Goddesses (2015).
The actor reveals that when people meet her, they realise how different she is off-screen. “They think I have a great sense of humour, but they’ve only seen me in serious, women-centric roles,” she says. One has to wonder: has she missed out on masala films in Bollywood because of her image? “I am sure I have because they have never even come to me,” she says.
But how sure is she of stepping into an uncharted territory? Chatterjee says, “I love taking up strong roles and characters which allow me to take risks. Sometimes they are fantastic and sometimes I fail, but that’s how you learn and grow, otherwise it becomes monotonous.”
