Authorities say a stretch of I-75 in southwest Detroit will likely be closed all day Friday after a tanker fire on the Rouge River Bridge.
The tanker caught fire just before 5 a.m. Friday on southbound I-75 at the midpoint of the bridge. Officials say the driver was able to escape the truck without injury.
Other circumstances surrounding the fire weren’t immediately clear.
Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Diane Cross said southbound I-75 is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day. Northbound I-75 was closed while the fire was extinguished, but re-opened to traffic just before 7 a.m.
Cross said crews have to be extremely careful assessing the situation because officials aren’t exactly sure what kind of substance the tanker was carrying. Once the threat of fire has completely cleared, crews then have to inspect the road and median for damages before the freeway can be re-opened.
Southbound I-75 remains closed at Springwells. Drivers should take westbound I-96 to get around the problem.
