A day after four members of a Dalit family committed suicide by jumping into a canal, the Faridkot police today arrested five persons on the charge of abetment to suicide. However, the police did not take any action against the two Akali leaders whose names figured prominently in the suicide note, purportedly written by the victims. To check the authenticity of the suicide note and the involvement of the Akali leaders in this suicide pact, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted. A SP-rank officer will head the SIT.On the statement of a daughter of deceased Jagtar Singh, the Faridkot police today booked six persons, including five members of a family, living in the neighbourhood of the victims.According to the FIR, Lal Singh, an employee in the Agriculture Department, had a scuffle with his neighbour Jagtar Singh. Mandeep Kaur, daughter of Jagtar Singh, alleged that on August 21, Lal Singh and his two sons attacked her mother with a brick, badly injuring her face. She alleged that as Lal Singh was enjoying the patronage of a senior Akali leader, the police were reluctant to take action against him and his two sons for attacking her mother. Besides, doctors also showed the fatal injuries as minor bruises and only an innocuous complaint was registered. After August 21, Lal Singh and his family members allegedly started building pressure on Jagtar Singh and his family to leave the locality.Faridkot SSP DS Mann said five members of Lal Singh’s family had been arrested and one was absconding. The police were searching for the bodies of Jagtar Singh and his daughter.
