Senior Samajwadi Party leader and Minister of the Jail Department in the Uttar Pradesh government Balwant Singh Ramoowalia has announced that his party has no plans to contest the Punjab Assembly elections. He said this after paying obeisance at a gurdwara in his ancestral Ramoowala village in Moga district today.Denying rumours that the SP was interested in expanding its party unit in Punjab, he said the main focus of the party was Uttar Pradesh, the elections to which were likely to be held along with Punjab in February 2017.Rumours were rife in the Malwa belt that the SP might rope in former MP Jagmeet Brar to expand its unit in Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections.Ramoowalia said he toured Sikh-dominated areas in UP in the past six months and received a rousing welcome from the community.Adding that the announcement of the SAD to contest the UP polls on 30 to 35 seats in UP will not have any impact on the SP, he said there was no question of Mulayam Singh Yadav joining hands with the Akalis in his state.
