“The facility will be available everywhere except the parkarma (circumambulation), the sanctum sanctorum, Akal Takht and area inside the shrine complex. Outside, it will be available at the information centre, Golden Plaza, `serais’ (inns) and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) office,“ said Jaspal Singh, in-charge of the internet department, SGPC.
He said technical preparations for the launch of the Wi-Fi facility will be completed by Monday , after which SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar will launch the service. Most hotels in the vicinity of the Golden Temple offer Wi-Fi services but at a cost. “Our service will be free of cost, after searching for our Wi-Fi service on the mobile phone or laptop, a website will open asking users to furnish details. Thereafter, a password will be sent on SMS after verification of security details,“ he said.
Last year, Dashashwamedh and Sheetla, two ghats of Varanasi, were connected with WiFi. Besides enabling visitors to stay connected, it also helped them locate places on the ghat.Last month, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited started high speed 4G Wi-Fi service at Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu.
