Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man was shot multiple times in a confrontation with Peel police in Brampton overnight. Police were called to an apartment complex on New Haven Manor near North Park Drive just after 1 a.m. for a disturbance and “a confrontation with a male resulted in shots being fired.”
Neighbour Sandy Ramos that the man was arguing with his girlfriend when she ran away and he chased her out of the building with a gun.
“I just moved here in February and this neighbourhood is so nice,” said Ramos. “My neighbours are super friendly. I’m quite appalled and shocked this is happening.”
The man was rushed to a trauma centre suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police say there is no outstanding threat to public safety in connection with the incident.
The SIU is now at the scene in Brampton and has taken over the investigation.
The SIU is an independent civilian law enforcement agency that investigates cases of death, serious injury or sexual assault involving police. SIU probes also limit what Peel police can say about the incident.
