When Rosie Rios became the first female United States Treasurer eight years ago, she was struck by the realization that every piece of currency representing the last 100 years of American history really only represents 50% of the nation’s population. “It dawned on me that all the women were allegorical, they were nameless people,” said Rios at the fourth annual Forbes Women’s Summit today.

Rios made it her mission to change that. Within months of proposing a currency redesign to former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, he approved it. Partially, she said, because like her, he also had a young daughter. Last year, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew formally announced that the $10 bill would be redesigned to feature a woman.

The lack of women represented in American culture was a common frustration voiced among the panelists discussing how to empower future leaders. The three panelists themselves have blazed a path for women role models through their work in government, entertainment and business.
