In a broad daylight robbery, eight to ten robbers shot dead a bank guard and fled away with Rs 60-lakh on Monday afternoon.The deceased has been identified as Harinder Singh, an ex-serviceman of Kaleke village.The robbers fired shots at him from a close range in a swift action by breaking the window panes of the vehicle transporting the cash without giving any time for the guard to react. Although, Singh was rushed to the district hospital immediately but the doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.Sources said officials of the Oriental Bank of Commerce were carrying Rs 60 lakh in cash in an Innova (PB-47A-0003) from a local bank to their bank in Baghapurana when this incident occurred.The cash was kept in a trunk in the car, which the robbers took away.SP (D) Amarjit Singh Ghumman reached the spot to inquire into the incident.Preliminary investigations revealed that the robbers also took away .12 bore gun before fleeing away with the booty. The eye-witnesses told the police that the robbers took the Tarewala village route to flee. They also revealed to the police that the accused came on an Innova and Verna. Another vehicle could have used in the incident, said a police officer.Bank official Baldev Singh also recorded his statement suspecting that an insider could have been involved in the incident.The police have sounded an alert in all the districts of the state and set-up special nakas on the highways and link roads.
