Liberal National Party MP John McVeigh resigned from the state seat after winning preselection for the federal seat of Groom in April. At the by-election, David Janetzki will represent the LNP, while Di Thorley will contest the seat as an independent.

Labor state secretary, Evan Moorhead, said the state administrative committee met to consider the nomination of a candidate for the Toowoomba South by-election.

He said it resolved that winning the federal election was the first priority for Queensland Labor.

“The July 16 by-election is not on the party’s agenda,” Mr Moorhead said.

“The ALP’s made the decision that the federal election is our number one priority.”

“Toowoomba South is a by-election of the LNP’s making and we’re not going to be running a candidate.

“We’ve got quite a strong branch in Toowoomba South and we had a number of people that were keen to get involved, however winning the federal election is our priority.” Toowoomba South is considered a safe conservative electorate.
