Punjab: Burnt body of kidnapped girl found, 3 held

The body of two-year-old Roshni, who was kidnapped on Friday from near her home at Khothran village in Nawanshahr district, was found on Sunday. The partially burnt body was recovered from Nadlon village, 40 km from the site of kidnapping, in adjoining Hoshiarpur district. Three persons were arrested, one of whom is a minor.
The three suspects reportedly told the police that they killed the girl the day she was kidnapped as she was crying continuously. The ransom demand for Rs 50 lakh was made the next day.On Friday evening, Ram Daresh Singh had taken his granddaughters Roshni and Ridhi out for a walk in a stroller. Singh said the kidnappers, who came on a motorcycle with faces covered, pushed him, picked up Roshni and fled. Singh immediately lodged a complaint with the police.
“Next day, Ranjan Kumar, my son and father of Roshni, got a ransom call on his phone,” said Singh. “We gave the number to the police, who arrested three persons,” said Roshni’s uncle Pawan Kumar.
The arrested men took the police to the site where the half-burnt body was found and identified by the family, said SHO Inspector Surinder Chand of Behram police station. The child was cremated late on Sunday.
The accused were identified as Goel Kumar alias Gauri, Harman Kumar alias Happy, both residents of Khothran village and in their early twenties, and a 15-year-old boy.
Nawanshahr SSP Naveen Singla said all three accused are school dropouts.
The SSP said the girl was kidnapped on Friday and strangulated the same day as she kept crying. He added that the accused set the body on fire before fleeing.
Roshni’s father Ranjan Kumar, an MBA who works for an MNC in Dubai, had come home for Diwali.
