Former state BJP president Kamal Sharma, on Tuesday, visited Alike village in Ferozepur. With an eye on the 2017 Assembly polls, the ruling SAD-BJP alliance has started reaching out to border villages of Punjab that often complain of lack of development.
Former state BJP president Kamal Sharma, on Tuesday, visited Alike village in Ferozepur, which is also Sharma’s hometown, and ‘gifted’ the villagers a large boat costing nearly Rs 5 lakh for commuting from the village towards Ferozepur and even Patti area of Amritsar. The village is close to the Indo-Pak border and water transport is preferred as road transport takes more time.
It takes 20-25 minutes for villagers of Alike and nearby areas to reach Patti in Amritsar while by road it takes about an hour. So people prefer water transport and in these heavyweight boats, they can also keep their vehicles i.e motorcycles, cars etc along with and get them off at the other corner, said Simarjot Singh, one of the villagers. The new boat can even bear the weight of a combine harvester, said Sharma.
He also presented a cheque worth Rs 3.86 lakh to village panchayat for development works and Rs 1.86 lakh to another village, Saddeke.
