The Barnala police today arrested Handhiaya police station incharge ASI Charanjit Singh and Head Constable Saudagar Singh for a farmer’s death at chowki.Baldev Singh (35) of Kothe Sran in Barnala allegedly “consumed celphos” at the Handhiaya police station on May 11 after he was brutally “beaten up”. The ASI and the head constable had since absconded.Deputy Superintendent of Police Palwinder Singh Cheema said they would be produced in court tomorrow.A case against the two policemen was registered at the Sadar police station, Barnala, on the complaint of Sukhwinder Singh.The latter alleged that Baldev Singh was killed by the police and that he was driven to consume celphos.On May 11, Baldev Singh, riding a motorcycle, was stopped by the ASI at a naka near Handhiaya Chowk.An altercation ensued and he was taken to the Handhiaya police station where he was allegedly “beaten up”, following which Baldev Singh consumed celphos.He died on way to the DMC Hospital in Ludhiana.
