Three young people travelling in an SUV that raced through Montreal at high speed last night were eventually arrested by police in the city’s LaSalle borough. Police were first alerted to the speeding vehicle in the city’s downtown core, near the intersection of Crescent Street and René-Lévesque Boulevard West.

The vehicle then took Highway 720 West, where it reached an estimated speed of 180 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, according to police.

The car was stopped by police after it left the highway at the Angrignon Boulevard exit and headed toward a condo parking garage.

Police say the 23-year-old man driving the car initially resisted arrest and drove over the foot of an officer.

He was eventually arrested, along with the two passengers, a 25-year-old man and 24-year-old woman.

Const. Manuel Couture said police found a loaded firearm after searching the vehicle.

The three individuals remain in police custody, and the driver could face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and armed assault. All three could face charges of possession of a firearm.

Couture says the two men are known to have ties with organized crime.
