The PM also interacted with Chawla’s husband and also met Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams and her father.Starting his official visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7 June paid his respects to Indian-American astronaut late Kalpana Chawla at Arlington National Cemetery.
The PM also interacted with Chawla’s husband Jean-Pierre Harrison, and also met Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams at Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial. Modi also spoke to William’s father in Gujarati. Later he laid a wreath at the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers.
“Honouring sacrifice, saluting valour. Formal engagements begin with a solemn ceremony,” tweeted external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup. “In homage to heroism and indomitable courage,” he added, in another tweet.
US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter accompanied the PM. Indian Ambassador to the US Arun K Singh, Jaishankar, US Ambassador to India Richard Verma and Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal were also present.
