The Phillaur police today arrested four members of an inter-state gang of buffalo thieves after a brief encounter, while three members fled. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sarabjit Singh Rai and SHO Jatinderjit Singh said the police recovered three SUVs, one pistol, four cartridges and four stolen buffaloes from the arrested persons.Rai said the buffalo thieves were wanted in about 90 criminal cases, including 60 in Jalandhar district and 21 in Nawanshahr district. The arrested gang members have been identified as Kulbir Singh and Jasbir Singh of Dhagarra village near Muktsar, Sukhchain Singh of Sahib Chand village near Gidderbaha and Angrej Singh of Muktsar. According to the police, they have confessed to stealing more than 100 buffaloes from several districts and selling them in Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.The DSP said the encounter between the police and the gang members took place on the Nurmahal road at Phillaur. The three gangsters who fled were identified as Jashu, Appu and Jinda.
