A stormy day of proceedings is likely in both houses of Parliament after the AgustaWestland chopper controversy erupted on Wednesday. BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy, who was recently nominated to the Rajya Sabha, made a statement on Wednesday linking Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the chopper case in which alleged payoffs were done in acquiring helicopters for the armed forces.
The Congress immediately hit back, calling the allegations baseless and demanding the completion of the CBI probe into the matter as soon as possible.
On February 24, 2012, The Indian Express had reported that an investigation begun by the Italian attorney general’s office into alleged unethical dealings by the state-backed defence major Finmeccanica had widened to include corruption in an over Rs 3,500-crore deal signed with India by the group’s subsidiary AugustaWestland for the supply of helicopters
