At a Reddit AMA in September, OnePlus had said that the company is “actively working” on Oxygen OS update based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The head of ROM, Brian Yoon, at that time did not share a timeline, however, Yoon has now confirmed to Engadget that a Nougat beta community build will be rolled out this month. He also said that once the build is stable it will push out an OTA update by the end of this year.

Yoon told the tech site that OnePlus is also working to bring Nougat to the OnePlus 2. Some reports earlier this month had suggested the same citing a GFXBench report. Yoon did not share a timeline for the Nougat update on OnePlus 2.

“As for updates, if there’s any company feeling the pressure of needing to update fast, it’s OnePlus. We have the most vocal and tech savvy user base, so this point is not lost on us. I believe that now, with our new software team structure, we’ll be able to move a lot faster than before,” said Carl Pei at the AMA.

OnePlus becomes another OEM after LG to be rolling out the latest Android update to its phones. Usually the phones that run stock or almost stock Android get the updates first. LG’s V20 smartphone was in fact the first phone to launch with Android Nougat.

OnePlus is expected to launch its next phone OnePlus 3T on November 15. While reports have suggested that the OnePlus 3T runs Android Marshmallow, we are also keeping the options open for an Android Nougat surprise with the new phone.

The OnePlus 3T is confirmed to come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 821 processor. The upcoming phone is expected to be an incremental update over the OnePlus 3, which was launched earlier this year. The new phone should have some slight changes in the camera and battery besides the processor upgrade.
