Dean Meiklejohn, 26, from Thurso, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the A9 near Thurso at about 19:00 on Thursday. Police said Mr Meiklejohn’s Ford Fiesta was involved in a collision with a Nissan Qashqai, which was an unmarked police car.
The female on-duty officer driving was unhurt.
The road was closed in both directions at the crash site for a police investigation.
Police said Mr Meiklejohn was travelling on the northbound carriageway towards Thurso and his car lost control while overtaking a green Vauxhall Vectra.
