A 71-year-old grandmother was found dead with several dog bites on her body on Tuesday in a suburban Antioch home, officials said. It was immediately unclear whether the woman was attacked and killed by two dogs in the house or whether she was bitten after she died.

The woman’s 23-year-old grandson found her when he came home Tuesday evening. He called 911 and reported that a German Shepherd and a Labrador-chow mix may have attacked his grandmother.

“It’s unknown if the dog bites came from one of the dogs or both of the dogs,” said Det. Chris Covelli, of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. “However she did sustain numerous dog bites covering her body … the dogs live here at the house and it’s unclear if they belong to the grandmother or the grandson.”

The Labrador was found in the house and the German Shepherd was roaming the neighborhood.

Both dogs were taken by animal control. An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday.
