Police said the men were on an end-of-season trip with a northern New South Wales rugby league team when they were asked to leave the Attic Nightclub about midnight on Saturday.
Cairns Magistrates Court heard a fight broke out and one of the men, 22-year-old Jackson McKenzie from Kingscliff, threw a glass at a security guard’s head.
The guard was seriously injured and remains at the Cairns hospital.
Three of the men – including James Mark Fletcher, 32, Jordan Johnson Curry, 34, and Jack Michael O’Brien, 24, are alleged to have links to the Lone Wolf motorcycle club.
Three men have been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm two with affray.
Lawyer Mark Butler told the court he was yet to view security footage of the alleged incident.
“There was a number of security guards and they outnumbered my clients,” Mr Butler said.
“It far exceeded reasonable force.”
Mr Butler said McKenzie had denied throwing the glass that injured the security guard and the incident had spilled out into a dark alleyway.
Police requested McKenzie be remanded in custody, but Magistrate Robert Spencer granted him bail, given his lack of criminal history and that he had “no links to bikies”.
All five men were granted bail.
They will have to report to their closest police station twice a week, have been banned from consuming alcohol and will undergo drug and alcohol testing. The matter will return to court in November.
