A newborn baby has died after her pregnant mother was involved in a car crash in Melbourne’s south-east. The 25-year-old mother was taken to hospital after two cars collided on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne at 1.40pm on Monday.

Her car was heading south near the Thompsons Road intersection when it was hit by another car exiting from a car park.

She was taken to hospital following the crash, where she gave birth to a girl. The child died on Wednesday night.

The driver of the second car, a 31-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Patrick said a criminal investigation into the baby’s death was in its early stages, but police would speak to “an offender driver”.
