The upcoming petrol pump at the Dehradun police lines has been named after the police horse, Shaktiman, which died on April 20. DGP Uttarakhand B S Sidhu laid the foundation stone of the facility inside the police lines on Thursday. Plans are afoot to name the main gate of police lines (gate number 2) and the stable after the horse. SSP Dehradun Sadanand Date said, “The construction of the Indian Oil Corporation petrol pump is likely to be over in the next three months. As a tribute to the horse, whom all of us regarded as a family member, we decided to name the petrol pump after it.”

During a BJP protest on March 14, a group of BJP members led by Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi had allegedly attacked the horse close to the state assembly. In the commotion, the horse lost control and fractured its leg. As the condition of the horse deteriorated experts were left with no option other than to amputate its hind left leg. The 14-year-old horse was purchased for Rs 95,000 and inducted in police force on March 18, 2006.
