The protesters have demanded changes to the Atrocities Act alleging that it was being misused and reservations for the Maratha community.Throwing his weight behind the ongoing Maratha community protests, former Chief Minister and Congressman Narayan Rane said Thursday the protests had the backing of Maratha politicians across party lines. “Even some BJP leaders are backing it,” said Rane.
Youths from the dominant community have been taking to the streets in large numbers holding demonstrations against the government. Four such protests have so far been held in Beed, Aurangabad, Osmanabad, and Jalgaon.
The protesters have demanded changes to the Atrocities Act alleging that it was being misused and reservations for the Maratha community.Rane hit out at the BJP government for the unrest, blaming it for dilly-dallying on the reservation demand. “The Congress-NCP regime had extended the reservations. But after the court stayed the move, the present regime has done nothing to get the stay lifted,” said Rane.
Supporting the demand for a review of the Atrocities Act, Rane said the government must appoint a committee in this regard. He, however, clarified that this was not his party’s stance but his own position on the issue.
Hinting that the protesters also had the backing of dismayed sections within the BJP, Rane said he would reveal the names of the BJP leaders at an appropriate time. He also hit out at the government for dishing out false assurances. He also alleged that there had been an increase in corruption instances in the state.
