Air India held Hockey unit of Tamil Nadu 2-2 in the opening game of the 90th all India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Thursday. The two teams were engaged in a tight contest right from the start. However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring when Joshua Bendici Wesley breached the opposition post with ease in the 17th minute of the first half.It took Air India 13 minutes to restore parity thanks to a Maninderjeet Singh pass which was deflected into the goal by Osaf-ur-Rehman. Both the teams did try their best to take the lead, but the first half ended at 1-1.
The subsequent period of play saw the teams trade punches at each other. There were a few chances but the scoreline continued to read 1-1. The match picked up pace in the 21st minute of the second half when the home team took the lead via a penalty-corner conversion by Hassan Basha.
In the other match of the day, Karnataka scripted a 2-1 win over Punjab & Sind Bank.
