It is necessary for universities to have multiple streams of education that will foster innovation and multi-disciplinary research, N. Vinay Hegde, chancellor of Nitte University, has said.
Delivering a lecture in a seminar on ‘Innovation in the emerging education scenario’ here on Saturday, he said that universities now were following single stream of education.
“This has led to research being taken up in a single stream. There is a need to connect science with engineering and commerce. Institutions should bring all streams together to provide complete knowledge to students,” Mr. Hegde said.
He said that the present education system was degree-centric where emphasis was on getting degree than gaining knowledge.
Application of knowledge
Education had distanced itself from real life as there was lack of application of knowledge to the ground situation.
Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, said that institutions should bring in changes in knowledge dissemination and meet the present needs of students. The role of teachers would not end with just teaching, but they should also prepare students for challenges.
“They have to make undergraduate students aware of various competitive examinations and also help them get jobs,” he said. Institutions have a greater role to play in turning students into enlightened citizens, Mr. Alva added.
The talk was organised by Mangalore University at University College in Hampankatta.
