Residents of Kilcoy, northwest of Brisbane, have woken to a small earthquake. Geoscience Australia recorded the magnitude-2.7 quake just before 6am on Saturday and said it was felt strongly by several residents across Kilcoy and the Woodford area.

There were about 50 emailed reports to the government agency, some residents describing the experience as similar to a low-flying plane or a large truck that woke them up and prompted dogs to bark.

“We’re talking about a rumble and shaking noise lasting some five seconds – that seems to be a consistent experience.

“It’s just simply shaking, vibrations through the house, but certainly no damage whatsoever.”

There have been four earthquakes within a 50km radius of Saturday’s epicentre, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 3, according to Geoscience Australia records.
