Police also arrested the fourth accused in the case late in evening while two others remain at large.
Sukhchain Singh Pali, 22, was found dead with his left leg chopped off late on Tuesday. Six people have been booked for the crime. Both the victim and the accused were involved in illegal liquor business, and the murder is said to be the result of inter-gang rivalry.
SSP Mansa Mukhwinder Singh, meanwhile, said the three accused have confessed to their crime “We have recovered three sharp weapons that were used to chop off the limb of the deceased. We have taken Sadhu Singh, Balbir Singh and Hardeep Singh in remand. Bareek Singh was arrested this evening. We are close to arresting Bitu Singh and Sita Singh as well.”Sources in police said Pali was murdered to settle old scores. He had beaten up Sadhu Singh’s brother and also had a brawl with three of the accused a day before he was murdered.
Meanwhile, Pali’s family have yet not cremated the body unless they were assured Rs 20 lakh as compensation besides a government job for a family member. They are also demanding arrest of the remaining three accused and inclusion of the SC/ST Act in the FIR.
Sukhbir Singh, younger brother of Pali, said, “Till now we have been told that the SC/ST commission will give us Rs 7.5 lakh after cremation. We are entitled for that compensation, but what is the support from the government’s side.”
The family continued their dharna on the civil hospital premises. CPI(ML) leader Amrik Singh Samao said the family will not budge till the time their demands were met.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also staged a dharna on the hospital campus.
Co-convener of Punjab AAP Jarnail Singh visited the family this morning while Sucha Singh Chhotepur, who recently launched a new political party, Apna Punjab Party (APP), also came to see the family.
National SC/ST Commission chairman Raj Kumar Verka has already sought a report on the incident from the SSP and Mansa DC within three days.
