Maneka vs Javadekar: Instances when she differed with party colleagues

Maneka Gandhi on Thursday criticised Environment Ministry for alleged ‘killing of animals’Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Thursday slammed Prakash Javadekar led Environment Ministry for its alleged ‘lust for killing’ animals. Maneka told the media that ‘it was the first time when ministry was giving permission to the states for killing of animals’. She was reacting to reports of large number of deer being killed in Patna in Bihar.
This is not the first that Maneka has differed with her Cabinet colleagues. In the past also she has not shied away from criticizing her own party and the government.
In October 2015, Maneka criticised the government’s decision to slash social sector budgets to compensate for infrastructural growth. The Union Minister said that the budget was only enough to pay salaries of her 2.7 million health workers until January 2016.
Maneka had asserted that instead of a budget cut, country’s food programme needed mordernisation as half the food was being lost because of mismanagement. After BJP MLA from Uttarakhand, Ganesh Joshi, came under fire for allegedly attacking a police horse during a party protest on March 14. The horse ‘Shaktiman’ suffered a leg injury during the commotion and it had to be amputated to save his life.
Maneka wrote a letter and demanded Joshi’s expulsion from the BJP. Joshi, however, denied that he had inflicted any injury on the animal. In October 2014, BJP had to distance itself from Maneka Gandhi’s letter which she had written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa welcoming her back to Chennai. Jayalalithaa was released from the Bangalore Jail after staying there for two weeks in disappropriate assets case.
Maneka had written, “I am deeply sorry that this has happened and I hope you will be formally back at the helm of administration.” BJP said that it was her personal letter and had nothing to do with party’s opinion.
