A 22-year-old man has been seriously injured after being shot while sitting in a car near the Danforth Sunday afternoon. Toronto police said the man was the driver of the vehicle, which also contained a female passenger who appears to have been unhurt.

Police first received calls about shots fired in the Denton Avenue and Byng Avenue just before 4:30 p.m. They located the bullet-ridden car a short distance away at Main Street and Danforth Avenue.

“I was sitting in my kitchen and all of a sudden I heard like six or seven gunshots,” Dave Currier, who lives in the area.

“Bang, bang, bang and that was it. It was just silence after that,” said Currier. “I told my wife, ‘Those were gunshots.'”

The man suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries to the leg and arm and was transported to a trauma centre in stable condition, Deputy Commander Jamie Rodgers of Toronto Paramedics said.

Danforth Avenue was closed in both directions as police investigated but has since reopened.

There is no word on a suspect at this time.

Police are asking anyone who might have been in the area at the time to come forward with information about what they may have seen or heard

“Any little thing that might not seem important to them… those details are always helpful to us,” Douglas-Cook said.

For his part, Currier says the brazen daylight shooting makes him worry for his family’s safety.

“This is scary,” he said. “It’s around the time that my wife would be out walking the dogs and the last thing I need for her is to be an innocent bystander.”
