A 29-year-old man is dead after he was shot during a police operation at a home in Montebello, Que. The incident happened at a home in Montebello on Saint François Xavier Street when police responded to a call for a man in distress, according to the bureau des enquêtes indépendentes du Quebec (BEI), which investigates injuries or death involving police.
Sûreté du Québec police officers entered the home and went into the attic, where they found a man armed with a knife, the bureau said in a news release.
The man ran at police and he was shot, the bureau said. He later succumbed to his injuries and died, police said.
Two witnesses told Radio-Canada they heard what sounded like gun shots.
The bureau has assigned nine investigators to the scene and will call upon the Montreal police should they need additional support.
