“They located a victim who had apparently collapsed by the door,” said Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw from the scene early Tuesday morning.
Shaw says the man was quickly taken out of the building and although attempts were made to revive him, the victim died at the scene.
A woman was also taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The Ontario Fire Marshal will be investigating the incident because of the fatality.
Fire officials say the blaze was in the living room of the apartment, which sustained heavy smoke damage but the fire didn’t spread through the rest of the building. The fire alarm was working, according to Shaw, and all of the evacuated residents have been allowed back into the apartments.
