A man facing a number of charges in connection to the death of a baby girl is being held in remand. The 27-year-old made his first court appearance in Saskatoon’s provincial court Friday. He’s charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessities of life in relation to the Jan. 29 death.

Police say officers received a call around 8 a.m. Jan. 29 about an unresponsive eight-month-old girl at an apartment in the 100 block of Avenue P South.

The baby was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined she died of asphyxiation, police said. The 27-year-old accused was arrested at the scene and charged with several breaches of conditional sentence order. He was arrested again Thursday morning and charged with the latest offences, according to police.

He can’t be named because of a publication ban. A bail hearing is scheduled for next week.
