A Baltimore man toting an AR-15-style rifle was killed by police after a Thursday night shootout, police said. Four plainclothes police were driving in an unmarked car when they heard the sound of gunfire, Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith told reporters at a press conference.

The officers drove toward the shooting and stopped at an apartment on the west side of town. From the parking lot, they caught sight of an active shooter, who swiveled and turned his weapon on police.

Police returned fire and hit the suspect, who has not been publicly identified. He later died at the hospital.

It’s unclear why the suspect was firing in the first place and no victims have come forward.

“Why was he firing initially? Who was he firing at? That’s something we don’t have the answer to,” Smith said. He said it wasn’t clear whether the shooter intended to target police.

“Officers were drawn due to gunfire. Were they specifically drawn there by him because he might have known they were in the area? We don’t know the answer to that yet, but that’s something that we’re trying to figure out.”
