After pressure mounted by AAP leadership, the police today booked five Akali Dal activists, including Gurjeet Singh ‘Nippy’ Aulakh, Youth Akali Dal’s Malout rural president, for allegedly attacking AAP volunteers during Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann’s rally in Malout on Saturday.
Besides Nippy Aulakh, SOI’s Muktsar district president Lappi Enakhera, Tona Lakhewali, Gurbinder and Babbu Nandgarh have been booked.
Gurpreet Singh Gill, SSP, Muktsar, said: “A case under Sections 323, 447, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered against those named by AAP activist Sukhjinder Singh.”
The SSP said a counter-case against AAP activists would be registered after recording the statements of SAD activists who had also sustained injuries.
Notably, Mann had yesterday announced that if the police failed to register a case against SAD activists for attacking AAP volunteers and disrupting their rally, they would lodge protests across the state.
Earlier in the day, AAP leaders Kanwar Sandhu and Sukhpal Khaira submitted a memorandum to the ADGP, IPS Sahota, seeking the registration of a case. They told reporters that the Akalis were using force in to damage AAP. “It is their attempt to murder democracy. It is our democratic right to organise rallies and functions,” they said.
