According to orders of commissioner of police, banks’ representatives will be held accountable if they fail to appoint security personnel at ATMs and any crime happens.”POLICE REMAINED alert on Thursday as banks throughout the city transferred huge amounts of cash in vans to ATMs and branch offices. Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Dhruman Nimbale clarified that though banks have been provided with adequate force to transport the cash, it will be their responsibility if any untoward incident happens at ATMs.
He added that bigger banks have also been provided with escort pilot vehicles as they are transporting cash in large quantities. Speaking to The Indian Express, Nimbale said, “There are more than 300 ATMs across Ludhiana city. We provided the banks with escort pilots today to ferry cash to their branches, but they are responsible for ATM centers’ security. Two months back, we issued orders that if banks do not have any security arrangements, they should close ATMs before midnight. But most of them are not adhering to our instructions.According to orders of commissioner of police, banks’ representatives will be held accountable if they fail to appoint security personnel at ATMs and any crime happens.”
He added that each bank has been provided up to eight policemen depending on the amount of cash they are transferring.
Heavy police bandobast was made near Feroze Gandhi market, which is the banking hub of Ludhiana. Banks have also deployed extra security at their entrance gates and personnel were also managing the queues of the people, who came to deposit or exchange Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on Thursday.
Meanwhile, in a huge relief of sorts for the police, not a single cash robbery or snatching incident was reported since Tuesday late. On an average, at least one or two cases of snatching happen in Ludhiana daily.
